Penrose Market 2011

Engineering Team

Hello, and welcome to the Engineering Team page, here you’ll find the entire 17 person team that have made this event possible.

As Engineering Manager it is paramount that I have a team of hard working individuals and great team players, and during the set-up and running of this event everybody has proved their commitment and ability to work as a solid unit.
I am immensely proud of what this team has achieved over the past month or so, especially seeing as we were able to build an entire working flyaway from equipment we found in the engineering suite.

Enjoy,
Daniel McNamara
Engineering Manager

Russell Fleming

Technical Director

My role as Technical Director is primarily to represent the engineering team at the event management level, but also to oversee all the technical aspects of Penrose Market, which has mostly involved allocating electrical power but also overseeing the lighting and front of house sound requirements.

103 out of the 156 companies that will be exhibiting on the day will require at least one electrical power outlet so it is my job to find out who they are and ensure that logistics can fulfil those requirements. With regard to sound and lighting, I communicate the event manager’s ideas to the engineering team’s logistics and audio teams to see what can be achieved. And then communicate the possibilities back to event management.

Dan McNamara

Engineering Manager

As Engineering Manager, my job is to plan where individual engineers are based, what their roles are and what is expected of them. I have been heavily involved in the preparation of this event and along with the Technical Manager and Assistant Engineering Manager have sorted through all of the requirements for the event and am helping to accommodate the needs of the teams. During the event I will be overseeing all engineering aspects, helping with problem solving and making sure the engineers are maintaining the high standards expected.

Emma Oliver

Assistant Engineering Manager

I'm an Audio Engineering Student, who has a keen interest in all things Audio from PostProduction to Comm's. I'm in my Second year and am Currently the Assistant Engineering Manager for Live Projects run within our Course. This involves liaising with each Department within the Engineering Department and ordering Stock and Hire Equipment. My main role is to organise all paperwork and deal with any problems that arise with Broadcasting and help problem solve.

Dan Edwards

Director

I am currently studying Broadcast Technology on the BET, or general engineering pathway. I have previously studied the Broadcast Operations course, and therefore decided to use a combination of both of these courses to take on the role of "Director" for Penrose Market. On the build up to the day, I have been putting together some of the content that will be used; plus I will be directing the Live stream (and its crew) from 12pm until 7pm. For this particular event that involves me directing a 7 multi-camera system, as well as directing sound and VT inputs.

Stuart Hodder

Lines

I’m Stuart Hodder and my role is Head of Lines. This involves making all the equipment talk to all the other equipment used in the Market. I’m responsible for making sure there are enough cables for all the cameras dotted around, as well as for the Audio equipment such as the front of house PA. I will also be using the Uni Router to make sure all the signals from the cameras are sent to our Engineering Floor where our Flyaway is set up.

Nile Hamilton

Lines

I am assistant lines, this role involves the organising, making and ensuring there are enough cables so the show can run smoothly. I have worked closely with the flyaway setup throughout and making sure all cables going in to the flyaway rack are  tested and in working order. I am on the Outside Broadcast pathway of the Broadcast Technology course.

Etty Ashby

Flyaway Studio

For the Penrose Market event i worked on building a flyaway studio used to create broadcast for 7 cameras. the flyaway will be located on the 9th floor which will be used as our remote TV gallery. In order to build the flyaway we had to design a system diagram detailed with all the input and output destinations, labelling the cables to create a cable schedule. To make the actual flyaway we used existing equipment that we already had from our previous old university and built it to be capable of handling the content to be broadcasted live.

Ed Ruddy

Flyaway Studio

For this event I worked on the flyaway. We were required to build a seven camera flyaway located on the 9th floor that would become a remote TV gallery for the event. In preparation for this we designed a system diagram complete with all input and output destinations as well as cable names. Using equipment that was already at our disposal we were able to build a full flyaway capable of handling the content to be streamed live.

Nick Patmore

Rigging and Logistics

My name is Nick Patmore, I'm on the BET (or systems) pathway and have been working on several different areas of engineering for this event. In the build up to the event I was heavily involved in the design, construction and testing of the flyaway built specifically for the show. My main role involved assisting in the planning for the show from a logistics point of view; with the main issue being how to power the 103 stalls that required it. I am a member of the main rigging team working to set up the stalls, distribute power, rig lights and ensure the other members of the rigging crew carry out their work in a safe manner throughout the building.
